MVC WITH ENTRAPMENT
PA TURNPIKE

As crews were returning from an earlier accident, a passing motorist stopped at the station and alerted Medic 47 of a tractor trailer that just turned over at the PA Turnpike Interchange on the 57 westbound onramp.  Medic 47 advised Communications and Highspire (Turnpike Communications) via radio of the incident and then responded to the scene with Rescue 4.

While enroute several conflicting reports were given as to the condition of the vehicle, number of injuries and if there was any entrapment.  Rescue 4 arrived on scene with a tractor trailer that tipped over onto the jersey barrier crushing the drivers side compartment of the tractor and the driver entrapped with minor injuries.  Upon assessing the scene, Rescue 4 requested the next due company to assist with extrication and then immediately began to stabilize the vehicle with air shores.   Engine 51 arrived on scene and assisted with stabilization and set ground ladders up so EMS personnel could access the patient.  Once the access to the patient was gained, the driver was quickly evaluated and it was determined he didn’t have any serious injuries, so he was assisted out of the cab.  The patient was eventually transported by Medic 47 to an area hospital for evaluation.  Crews remained on scene and assisted with traffic control until the tractor trailer was removed from the roadway. Crews were out over an hour.
