Shortly
after 20:00 hours this evening companies 4,5,1,
and Command 32 were dispatched to Cambridge
Square Drive for a possible structure fire.
Immediately after communications was done
transmitting the alarm, C-43 advised that
he had visible smoke and fire visible from
a quarter mile away requesting a second alarm.
C-43 arrived on scene with fire venting from
the second and third floors of a garden style
apartment complex and established command
on side 1. E-41 arrived on scene and dropped
a split lay into the front of the fire building.
E-51 picked up engine 41's split lay and established
a water supply at a hydrant behind the fire
building. E-12 laid a second supply line from
152 Cambridge square into the scene to supply
E-14 and T-4. Crews quickly assembled, and
began to conduct interior searches for missing
residents but as conditions in the building
depreciated quickly and water supply problems
presented themselves a defensive operation
was established with T-4 and T-5 master streams.
As the master streams were attempting to be
put into place, C-20 who assumed water supply
operations established a third 5 inch supply
which was hand jacked through a fence and
into the nearby Monroeville meadows apartment
complex the borders the Cambridge Square Apartments
where E-61 was positioned to feed off of a
separate hydrant system. Units continued in
a defenses operations for some time and then
went back to an offensive operation once the
bulk of the fire was knocked down. Crews operated
on the scene for several hours performing
various stages of overhaul and assisting fire
investigators. E-41 cleared and the scene
and command was terminated at 02:23 hours.
Units
from company 4 returned to the scene over
the next few days to assist investigators
in their investigation. During the incident
several people and firefighters were transported
to local hospitals for minor injuries. The
fire is currently under investigation by the
Allegheny County Fire Marshall's Office and
Monroeville Police Department.
