Incident writeup of event
At 00:27 hrs Communications received numerous calls for a large amount of smoke coming from Kubick's Lawn & Garden Center on Route 22. Stations 5, 4, and 6 were dispatched on the first alarm assignment. Communications updated responding units with reports of an explosion and large amounts of flammable liquids located in the basement of the structure.
The first arriving units encountered a single story strip mall containing 5 stores with heavy smoking coming from the rear of the structure. E-41 established a water supply on side 1 of the southwest corner of the building and crews started an interior attack. Crews from stations 5 and 6 set up operations on side three of the structure and made an aggressive interior attack at the bulk of the fire.
At 00:35 hrs a 2nd Alarm was transmitted bringing the remaining Monroeville companies (1 & 3) to the scene. And later at 01:02 hrs due to deteriorating fire conditions, command decided to evacuate the structure and move to defensive operations. Trucks 4 & 5 were then placed into position to apply their master streams. Units remained on scene for approx 7 hours containing hot spots and cleaning up.
